The spider-crab was a native species of sea life, considerably larger than any terrestrial crab.

Spider-crabs were not in fact crustaceans, but rather more of segmented, tough-hided, many-legged seagoing slugs. Despite that, their legs were considered a great delicacy. (OAR)
