A schooner was a type of sailing ship characterized by the use of fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts with the forward mast being shorter or the same height as the rear masts.

Merlin Athrawes first introduced the schooner concept to the Charisians in the Year of God 890. The first one ever to sail was Dawn, a converted Howell Bay coaster who already showed many of the advantages of the rigging: it could sail between twenty to twenty-five degrees closer to the wind, and the sailhandling crew's size could be significantly reduced.
