Originally scheduled for a September 2013 release, the book was delayed after Weber announced on his website that extra time for editing would be required. It was finally released on 18 Feb 2014.
The book picks up in July of the Year of God 896, with events continuing to be centered around the Siddarmark Civil War and the broader Holy War on Charis. General Eastshare has recently arrived in the Republic of Siddarmark after marching the Imperial Charisian Army through Raven's Land, and the full strength of Reformist land forces are engaged against the Army of God for the first time. New Charisian innovations, such as the breech-loading rifle and the steam-powered ironclad, are key to Eastshare's quest to overcome the Temple's vastly superior numbers and raw resources as the Empire of Charis seeks to save the Republic and establish a permanent foothold on the mainland of Haven.
