A Greek galley

A galley was a ship which could be propelled entirely by human oarsmen, used for both warfare and trade.

One-masted galleys were the backbone of the Safeholdian navies of the 9th Century of God, until faster and more manoeuvrable sailing ships like the galleon began to replace them.

Around the Year of God 890, the Royal Charisian Navy kept eighty galleys in permanent commission, along with only a handful of galleons, with another fifty galleys being held in reserve. (OAR)
