A cotton gin was a machine originally invented and used on Earth that could separate cotton fiber from its seeds quickly and efficiently.

Prior to its invention, that process was done by hand. Once introduced by Merlin Athrawes on Safehold, it was used to separate cotton silk from its seeds and quickly spread. (OAR)
